Repurposed Vintage Ledger

My daughter and I met a friend at a fabulous antiques mall a couple of weeks ago and I picked up this vintage ledger.  The spine was in pretty bad shape, but it still had lots of usable pages.  So, I decided to rebind it so I could use it to track my budget!  Following a budget isn't much fun, but I'm hoping that using a lovely vintage ledger like this will motivate me.

Firstly I cut out the insides of the journal with a very sharp knife.  I separated out the individual signatures that you can see here still bound together.

With a straight edge and sharp knife, I removed 1/4" from the edge of each signature.

I have an industrial strength binding machine to create my photo albums, but if you wanted to do a similar project, visit your local copy shop.  Most have some kind of binding machine and will be able to do it for you.

Once I had cleaned up the covers, I realized that they were too thick for the binding machine (my projects never go quite as planned), so I had to punch the holes with a heavy duty hole punch (Crop-a-Dile) - that took some wrist strength!

Once more into the binding machine to add the spirals.

Here's the finished project - I've already started using it!

Vintage Book Page Card Tutorial

There are lots of very talented card makers out there but I forget sometimes that not everyone is comfortable creating a handmade card. So for today's post I thought I'd show step by step how I created a very simple handmade card using vintage paper for Gingersnap Creations. I have included a supply list at the end.  Enjoy!

Here's a list of the supplies I used.  Unless otherwise noted, you can buy the items at a big box craft store, such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby

• Acrylic stamps (Flourishes)
• Versafine ink in Onxy Black and Vintage Sepia
• Markers (Stampin' Up!)
• Beads (Penny Wise Arts)
• Watercolor Card Base (Dick Blick)
• Glue stick and glue dots
• Vintage book page
• Vintage button and crochet thread
• Other items: scissors, sponge, ruler, acrylic stamping block

Book Pages and Napkins

I created a card for a challenge yesterday on The Stamp Man challenge blog and they had an interesting tutorial using patterned napkins.  Of course, I had to put my own spin on it and use old book pages.

I've included some step-by-step photos below. Please let me know if you have any questions and if you try this technique yourself.

Tear scraps from old book pages and adhere

to a card stock panel using Modge Podge

or gel medium. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Separate a decorative napkin and glue

top patterned layer to the collaged

book pages.  Allow to dry.

 

Continue to layer torn napkin onto sheet

until satisfied with the composition.

Allow to dry.

Trim up edges as necessary and 

sponge with brown ink.

Cover surface with one final layer of

Modge Podge or gel medium. Allow to dry.

Use panel as desired.
